Week 6: Quizzical NHL goodness

According to the internet, I should be a Boston Bruins supporter.

And a Detroit Red Wings supporter.

And a San Jose Sharks supporter.

Plus a supporter of a few other teams.

So, this week, to break things up, I took a couple of “which NHL team should I support?” quizzes.

Playbuzz.com’s “Which NHL team should you be rooting for (US Version)” punched out Boston Bruins after asking me what colour I prefer (I picked white), what kind of season I prefer (the options were a fun and enjoyable one and the other a Stanley Cup season – no brainer which I picked there), what do you do as a fan (answer: jump and scream when necessary), what is the most important event (I picked home opener over NHL Draft, Stanley Cup Finals and start of the playoffs) plus a couple of other questions.
In the end, I got six-time Stanley Cup champions the Boston Bruins as the team I should support.

This is a little funny. Only because the Bruins’ fan-run site Stanley Cup of Chowder became Newcastle North Stars fans during the 2016 season. The North Stars are my Australian Ice Hockey League team. I was behind the campaign to get Chowder to become North Stars fans. Oh how the tables have turned!

I also took the helloquizzy.com “Which NHL Team(s) Should You Root For Test”.

This quiz had more considered answers for you to pick from. Like this one:

You’re having a tough time deciding on a team, so you figure that it’s time to start looking at some individual players. When evaluating players, what do you most want to see in your team’s ‘star’?
1. A superhuman ability to see the play develop and react accordingly (I picked this one).
2. Sickeningly sweet hand-eye coordination.
3. Speed, damnit. Lots of speed.
4. Who needs skills? Let’s just beat the @#%* out of them in a fight.

And this one:

Naturally, your team’s style of play is going to be influenced by your head coach. So, when picking your team, what sort of coach do you want behind your bench?
1. A tough disciplinarian who demands that his players do everything he tells them to at all times (I picked this one).
2. A laid-back guy who’s willing to give his players leeway to create for themselves on the ice.
3. A brilliant strategist who knows all of the playing styles inside and out, but struggles to relate to his players.
4. A coach who gets along great with his players, but has trouble controlling them on the ice.

The computer scored my answers – 81% in Intelligence, 82% in Athleticism, 92% in Sportsmanship, and 81% in Loyalty – which gave me five teams that I should support: Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins.

Five teams? That’s not very helpful.

However, when I read on I did see that it is helpful. It showed me that those are the teams I should be looking closer at based on the qualities I desire and appreciate in a team. This was cemented by the second part of my test answer, which said:

“Your team is in a category by itself. They exude class, they never quit, they have the skill, speed, grit, and determination to go all the way, and they always seem to get better as the year goes on. There aren’t many teams in this class, and that’s understandable – it’s a rare class to achieve. The only way they can lose is if they beat themselves… and it’s been known to happen, so don’t get too cocky now.”

If you’re questioning my sanity about taking stock in what an online quiz says I should do, I can assure you my marbles are not lost. I’m not about to cut the 25 other teams off the list and just focus on these five.

But you have to appreciate that pretty decent reasoning.

Another quiz I plan on taking, as suggested by Alyssa on Twitter (@alyssastweeting), is a NHL Sorter on Tumblr by Jessee Pinkman.

It’s an optional sorter. It prompts you to pick your favored team from two options. You can also select ‘I like both’ or ‘No opinion’.

The very first option was to pick between the Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers. I haven’t watched either of those teams in action yet. So, rather than just selecting ‘No option’ I decided to get a couple more game views under my belt, try and get at least one view in for each NHL team, then take the sorter.

Because as Jessee says on the sorter, “hitting ‘no opinion’ or ‘I like both’ frequently will negatively affect your results”. So, there’s no point taking the sorter if I’m always hitting ‘no opinion’.
